Algy Hoare – Musical Director
Todays band owes its existance to Algy, when as a teacher at the secondary school in Wadhurst, now Uplands Community College, he started giving brass lessons to the students in the 1950s. The school band was formed in 1960 and he and his players became great ambassadors for the school. This success naturally led to a youth band that eventually evolved into the Wadhurst Brass Band.
Algy studied music at Loughborough (where he has recently been awarded an honorary degree) and Trinity College of Music, London, gaining both teachers and performers diplomas.
Under Algy’s baton, the band has developed a friendly and welcoming style, encouraging players both young and old to grow their musicianship. Most of all he has encouraged the band to enjoy their music and revel in playing for others. Locals have come to love his easy wit with which he provides little snippets of introduction to each piece. Music to Algy is his life and should be full of fun, always to be relished!
Although retiring from conducting in 1998 Algy continued to play euphonium with the band and once more took up the baton in March 2009.
